Installing a NovaCool Fridge/Freezer in the Galley

When we bought her, the 2023 survey listed the original Norcold refrigerator/freezer in the galley as inoperative. A boat you want to cruise and live on needs a fridge you can count on, so it was one of the first things on the list: out with the Norcold, in with a new NovaCool refrigerator/freezer.

Why it was harder than it looks

I'll be honest — this one was quite a challenge to install. A fridge swap on a 30-plus-year-old boat is never just "unplug the old one, slide in the new one." If you're planning the same job on your 3888, these are the things to think about before you buy:

  • Measure the opening and the path in. The unit has to fit the cabinet cutout and make it down the companionway and around the galley corner.
  • Power. Check whether the new unit runs on 12 V DC, 120 V AC, or both, and that the existing wiring and breaker suit it.
  • Ventilation. Marine fridges need airflow around the compressor to work efficiently — don't box it in tight.
  • Securing it. It has to stay put in a seaway, so plan how it will be fastened.

The result

A modern, efficient fridge/freezer that holds temperature — and one less item from the survey list. You can see it in the galley photos in the Interior section.
